Frequently Asked Questions

A list of questions commonly asked about the Domain Name Constructor Tool.

Are there any limits to the length of my Name?

Yes, there is a limit of 63 characters before the .(dot) of the domain. Your word lists will only create results that are 63 characters or less.

How do I use the Domain Name Search Tool?

You will complete 3 steps to search for the perfect domain name for your site when using the . You will enter words into up to 3 words lists. The system will locate synonyms for those words (synonyms are a Pro option). You can then choose to add selected synonyms to your search criteria. Optionally: you can select additional Top Level Domains (TLD)s to search (TLDs are also a Pro option). Then, finally, the system will use the criteria you selected to search for your perfect domain name.

How words many are allowed in a word list?

With the Pro version, the sky’s the limit; however, generating a huge list of names to check will tie up your system for what could be many hours, perhaps days. Selecting a good search is the best way to achieve success. Please be aware that even on a desktop system, the browser will limit the number of possibles names to 2 million. These 2 million names may take the fastest system and Internet connection over 72 hours to complete the search.

With the Lite version, only 10 words are allowed in a maximum of two word lists.

How do I enter the words into the word lists?

Words entered into the list can be separated by pressing enter, a comma, a space, or a tab.

Does it only find names for websites?

No. The Domain Name Search Tool can be used to find names for any service you want to publish on the Internet. It could be a mail server, a ftp server, a MUD server, anything that needs a unique name for users to connect to on the Internet.

How long does a search take?

Short answer: it depends.

Long answer: the number of words and the possible combinations generated will directly effect how long a given search may take. Many moving parts are used across the Internet to locate domain names that are not being used. Our process does this as efficiently as possible, but factors such as your Internet connection speed, other traffic on the Internet connection, and your web browser’s performance can directly effect the time needed to complete the search.

I stopped a search or a search was interrupted, what can I do?

The system automatically saves your search parameters and the results.  You can find your previous searches, completed or not, on the main menu under My Account -> Search History.  This will provide a list of all the searches made using your account.  You can select any of the searches to restart and review results of completed searches.

I am using my mobile device, does the search tool work on my mobile device?

Yes, if you are able to view this page without any issues, then your device can perform the searches. However, due to the limited resources on a mobile device, we recommend that you keep your search parameters small to avoid consuming large amounts memory during the search which may slow your other applications.

I performed a search and I want to retry it with some changes?

You can locate all previous searches using the menu options My Account -> Search History.  You can then select any of the searches, completed or not, to resubmit with changes.  This will allow you to make changes before submitting the search.

Example Pro Level Run Walkthrough

Say you are looking for a name for your new lawn care business and the website you want to build.  You want to name it with part of your family’s name in it and your family name is Lincoln.

So, for Step 1, you would enter words in word lists. In word list 1 we are going to enter 2 words:   lincoln and lincolns(here we enter the word with an S to indicate possession in the title like Lincoln’s. Also remember that no special characters are permitted in the name except the -(dash) and an option is provided to add that dash as needed).  For word list 2 we going to enter 3 words: lawn, grass, and yard.  And finally for word list 3, we are entering 2 words: care and service. Next we will select the positioning for each word list.  Word list 1 we are checking First,  Word list 2 we are checking Middle, and finally Word list 3, we are checking Last. No word lists have been marked as Optional, as we wish a word from each of the word lists to be required in the final name.  Now after hitting the button to continue to Step 2, you will be presented with a list of synonyms for each of the words in each of the lists. [A lot of words to choose from!]

The word lists will list the words you entered (the root words) and any synonyms the system matched.  You can select a number of the synonyms to add to the search list and you can deselect any root words you may have changed your mind about.  Select or deselect root words and synonyms as you see fit,  in this case we’re leaving all the root words selected, but choosing to add one of the many synonyms by checking the a word in word list 3: maintenance.  We’ll now click the button to continue to step 3; which is the last step before the results are built.

Pro level accounts can also choose during step 3, the Top Level Domains you may want to select instead of or in addition to the default .com.  These can be used to search additional top (sometimes call root) level domains.  Most users look for a .com address (as do most web browsers), so for this example we’ll take the default and search for .com addresses.

After clicking the button to Begin Construction; the system will use the search criteria selected to build a possible list of domain names and then check each of those names for availablity.  A status window will appear while the system is processing, giving you real-time feedback on the progress of the search.

The results of our example run (which may be different as names are registered or retired since this example was originally produced) are as follows:  18 names constructed, with 13 available possibilities. Those available possibilities are:
