A Case Study

GoDaddy.com vs. DomainConstructor.com

A Case Study on why you should use
Domain Constructor:

Why should you use Domain Constructor? That is a great question. I mean, everybody knows that every Domain Registrar has a search capability, to help you find a domain name.

So what sets Domain Constructor apart?

Well, the best way to illustrate the advantages of DomainConstructor is to do a side-by-side comparison with our competition. Let’s take a look at GoDaddy, which is the largest domain registrar. When we went to GoDaddy and searched for DogWasher.com, we got 47 results and suggestions to choose from:

  • dogwasher.com $4,999 This domain is owned and for sale by the owner (being flipped – see below). It cost the current owner (probably GoDaddy.com themselves) about $15 to register. GoDaddy (like most registrars) first lists domains they own, and is constantly looking for open domains to buy, so they can make these huge profits.
  • dogwasher.us+dogwasher.info+dogwasher.online $4.74 for the first year. That’s because they’d cost $101.96 after the first year. From a market value standpoint, .com domains are the most valuable since they’re the most respected and common.  So maybe this isn’t such a good deal.
  • dogwasher.ai $59.99 but $139.99 after the first year.
  • dogwasher.club $1.88 but $21.99 after the first year.
  • dogwasher.horse $39.99, but why would anyone want this?
  • dogwasher.live $1.99 but $39.99 after the first year.
  • dogwasher.online $.99 but $49.99 after the first year.
  • dogwasher.shop $1.49 but $44.99 after the first year.
  • dogwasher.app $17.99 but $23.99 after the first year.
  • dogwasher.social $1.99 but $45.99 after the first year.
  • … and a total of 47 in all that are similar, most just different extensions. See some more below.

There are many more similar entries, where GoDaddy is trying to sell you your name on a secondary tier domain extender instead of trying to find other possible names you might be interested in. But that doesn’t mean that GoDaddy doesn’t try to give you other similar names to consider! In fact, it also offers you the following:

  • washer.dog $9.99, but $75.99 after the first year. But did you even know there was a .dog extension?
  • mydogwasher.com $.01, but $21.99 after the first year. This one could work.
  • boxwasher.com $2,895, but what does this have to do with dog washing???
  • swasher.com $4,799, again, how does that help you reach your customer base?
  • dogwasherrepair.com $.01, but $47.99 after a year. Huh? Maybe for robotic dogs? Or are we just fixing them while we wash them?
  • dogpressurewasher.com $.01, but $21.99 after a year. I’m not sure your customers would be happy with the results…
  • dogwashreviews.com $.01, but $21.99 after one year. Hmmm… Most dog washers don’t review their customer’s pets.
  • qwasher.com $4000, huh?
  • iewasher.com $1,999, huh?
  • footwasher.com $4,499, I guess they think you might specialize in only washing the dog’s feet?
  • motowasher.com huh?
  • homewasher.com, $1,421, maybe they think you should expand your business from only doing dogs…
  • davidwasher.com $2,895, I guess you’d only wash pets named David?

These are just some of the options GoDaddy made available in August of 2023. You can check with them yourself, to see what domains they currently offer for dogwasher.com by clicking:

https://www.godaddy.com/domainsearch/find?checkAvail=1&domainToCheck=dogwasher.com

To summarize these from a helpful perspective, if you are looking for the perfect “.com” extension, and are not just simply searching for domain names that are readily available on the marketplace (i.e.-not buying a domain name from another individual at a premium), then GoDaddy gives you only 8 available .com domains to choose from.

As you can see, GoDaddy is focused more on making money by selling you a domain they own, rather than finding you a real option that’s still available.  And who can fault them?  They would make $21.99 a year registering your .com domain name, when they can make $1000s buying it themselves and selling it outright.  They are your competition for good domain names, so why would they give you the best choices?  And we speak from experience, all registrars operate the same way.  Twice we have found domain names we liked, only to come back the next day and find that the registrar themselves bought it and are now selling it at a premium price.

That’s where DomainConstructor.com is useful!

Instead of just putting in one domain name, in Domain Constructor you start out by putting words into word lists.  Compatible/replaceable words are grouped together.  So in the first list we put the words ‘my’, ‘the’, and ‘your’.  We then select that this word list is optional, and doesn’t have to be in the results.  We also select that it can be in the first or last position of the domain name, but not in the middle.  Next, we enter the words ‘dog’, puppy’, and ‘pet’ in the second word list, and the words ‘washer’, ‘scrubber’, ‘cleaner’, ‘cleaners’, ‘washers’, and ‘scrubbers’ in the third list.  For both lists we allow the words to be in the first, middle, or last positions.  We then go to the second page and select all the synonyms of those words that we’d like to include in our search.  In this case, we selected 5 synonyms for the first list, 30 synonyms for the second, and 23 synonyms for the third.  On the next page, it allows us to search for over 1500 extensions, but we select to search only for the .com extension, since it’s by far the most prevalent, professional, and expected by clients.

Then we go to the next page.  The system now shows us that there are 16,200 domain names it has created to check per our guidelines, and that it will search for them now.  So we tell it to go for it.

So it takes it about 20 minutes to run (your time will vary depending on your equipment and internet connection). 20 minutes – That’s a lot of time to wait, especially from a computer. But the reason for that delay is that the system has to go out on the internet, to the individual registrars, and find out from them which domains are actually available, and have not been purchased from someone else yet. And just to put things into perspective, if you tried to do this manually, checking domain after domain, it would take you over 90 hours to do. Over two weeks. Incredible.

After it has run it finds 15,912 of the domain names available to you. Of course, most of these are nonsensical, and useless to you.  But there are some real gems, like:

bowwowcleaners.com
bowwowscrubbers.com
caninecleanerservice.com
caninewashers.com
dogbathservice.com
dogcleanerservices.com
doggiebathservices.com
